A Scenic Morning in Gardur, Iceland

Gardur

I'm finally getting into some of my Iceland posts and I am so excited to bring you some amazing information about Iceland over the next week or so.  For my two year wedding anniversary, my husband and I went to Iceland (for our one year anniversary we went to Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic).  Why Iceland?  It's been my number one on my bucket list since I was 13.  I explained before my love for their music and  culture and geography and I have to say that Iceland did not dissapoint.  In fact, it just moved to the top of my list for favorite places I've traveled to.

Today I'm going to show you a small town off of the southwest coast of Iceland.  It's called Gardur.  B and I booked only 3 jammed packed days in Iceland.  We arrived at the Keflavik airport late at night and though our aim was to head to Reykjavik, we needed a place to stay in Gardur for the night.  We stayed at a place called Guesthouse Gardur.  It is only a 10 minute cab ride from the airport and the prices are reasonable.  I would recommend them if you need a place to stay for the night.

What's lovely about this area is that it's right by the coast so there are various types of birds that you can see and also Icelandic horses.  I've never seen such beautiful horses.  These horses are relatively smaller than ones you'd see elsewhere but they are sturdy.  It is forbidden in Iceland to import or export these Icelandic horses.  It is said that these horses were brought over by the Vikings and thus have the same bloodline.  For being Viking ponies, they are very very friendly.  These ponies are all over Iceland and they have no problem coming up to you if you go near.

Besides the birds and horses in Gardur, you can see the Gardskagaviti Lighthouse.  B and I walked from our cottage in Gardur to the lighthouse just snapping pictures of the beautiful surroundings.  I felt like I was in another world and although it was quite chilly and rainy for the beginning of August, I enjoyed my time here immensly.

The second to last picture is of the cottage that we stayed in.  Also near the lighthouse is a restaurant.  But we only spent a few hours walking around Gardur in the morning as our next stop would be to catch the bus which our host graciously drove us to, and we headed to city of Reyjavik which was about a 1 hour bus ride.

Fun Fact:  According to Wikipedia, Of Monsters and Men are from Gardur.

    1. I didn't get to experience any spas except for The Blue Lagoon and I was afraid to ask the price of a massage.

  7. Very cool trip! I've been wanting to visit Iceland ever since not just one but two of my friends moved there from Texas in high school. I would love to visit there and see the Northern Lights. Is it a very long plane ride from where you live? That's the main thing that's putting me off at this point. I would need to do it as a stopover to Europe for it to make sense moneywise. I like the ponies and that little yellow house with the red roof.

    1. Wow if two of my friends moved there and I had a place to stay I'd def visit. From Germany it's only a 4 hour flight.

  8. Love all the horse photos and would love to live in the yellow house with the red roof. No wonder those horses are happy with all the green grass.
