Palma de Mallorca: Part 1

palma de mallorca

Last month I was able to spend 5 wonderful days in Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands in Spain.  I needed to plan a girls trip with one of my best friends and we needed to keep it as cheap as possible.  Fortunately RyanAir flies to Palma out of Memminghem so the decision was pretty easy.  Not only did Palma end up being great for a cheap flight and Airbnb stays there were pretty decent as well, but it turned out to be the perfect place to spend a girls trip.  It has shopping, beaches, food, culture, and a fantastic night life.  And the people there are so beautiful and nice!

I'm going to give an overview of the things that we did in Palma in case you are planning a trip there soon (and you should).  My friend is seriously already trying to find ways to move there.

The Food
Why not start off by talking about the food.  It's Spain, the food is great.  Besides trying to eat as much fish as possible, like bacalao and shrimp, I discovered my favorite snack in Palma; Allioli sauce with bread and Mallorcan olives.  The white sauce was so good and I eventually realized it was basically a mixture of garlic and mayo.  Some other great things I ate were Paella, goat cheese salads, and various tapas. And don't forget the Sangrias and Mojitos.  I must have had a liter of Sangria at every other meal.

Forn Teatre was one of the places we went to a couple of times for tapas and drinks.  Their Sangrias are also more affordable than some of the other places.  I also recommend for cheap and delicious tapas, La Botana and Tast which are both downtown.

Tip:  Make sure you ask the price of a liter of Sangria in advance.  We had been spending around 8-10 euro on a liter of Sangria most of the time and assumed this was the going rate but we ate at a place called Pizzeria Anthony's and ordered and found out afterwards that the same liters of Sangria were 18 euro each.  I'm pretty sure we were getting ripped off but the prices weren't posted anywhere so we couldn't dispute it.  Just make sure you ask first.

The Beaches
Mallorca has some of the best beaches I've seen if not the best.  We took a bus (line 3) on Jaume III street all the way to the last stop, Ses Illetes, and found the most beautiful beach.  The sand bank isn't very long but there are also other areas to perch on and lay out.  The water is so clear and warm.  The views alone are worth it.  You can stop at any one of the nearby beaches as well and get the same beautiful coves to spend a day at.

A more family friendly beach and more easily accessible would be to go to the town of Portixo.  You can follow the beach in Palma and walk about 20 minutes to get there or take the bus for a few euro.  This beach doesn't compare at all in beauty but it's another spot to go.  Here I was also served one of the best goat cheese salads I've ever had at the Tapas Club.  And it was affordable!

The Cathedral
The Cathedral is in the old town but you can get views of the tops of it from all over town. It's pretty impressive.  It's a huge Catalan Gothic design and worth visiting. There are a lot of good restaurants and shops near this area.

The Dali Museum
I don't know how I managed to do it but I'd stumbled upon yet another Dali exhibit (near the Cathedral).  My first time was in Philly and the second in Sorrento, Italy.  There are quite a few Dali exhibits around the world.  While the exhibit I saw in Sorrento was more about sculptures, this one was more about his drawings. I love his work and can't pass up an exhibit when I see one, especially since Dali is from Spain.

The Shopping
The shopping in Palma was fabulous.  They have such good style and beautiful hand crafted jewelry and clothes.  Mallorca is known for their pearls and I'd suggest buying some while you are there. There are many kinds of pearl jewelry to choose from and it's very affordable.

The Night Life
I also have to mention how fabulous the night life in Palma is.  I know Ibiza is known as the party island but Palma has a lot going for it too.  I had a great time at the dance clubs and bars.  People are nice and I felt absolutely safe.  Do make sure that you are paying attention to how much your drinks cost because a few times bar tenders tried to rip us off.  This was probably the only negative thing I'd have to say about Mallorca is that if someone can try to get one over on you as a tourist, they will. Just pay attention and speak up.  Generally the party in Palma doesn't start till 2 am and goes on till about 6 am.  I loved Palma and you will too.

Stay tuned for the second part of my trip where I mostly talk about visiting the small town of Soller, Mallorca by way of vintage train!

10 of My Favorite Songs by Icelandic Artists

Oddly enough some of my favorite artists come from Iceland.  What type of music could I possibly like that comes out of such a small country?  Well, a lot.  Iceland is increasingly becoming a top travel destination and it's pretty known these days that they have a kickass music scene.  But I've been listening to artists from Iceland since I was about 13. First I started listening to Bjork.  Obviously.

But then I found a whole other slew of great Icelandic artists to listen to. The whole opening music at my wedding was Sigur Ros.  I'm sure no one had any idea what was playing but I hope they enjoyed it. It's been hard keeping up with new music in general since living in Germany.  Many of the music on YouTube for instance is blocked by Gema.  And German radio isn't the best.  I gotta say, German music is pretty bad.  Unless I'm enjoying an Oompah band at Oktoberfest, I try to stay away from it.  Who knows, maybe someone can make me a believer.

But back to the point, I've found a lot of Icelandic bands that I enjoy.  The music is beautiful, soulful, and unique.  So in an attempt to show off some of my favorites, I've picked out 10 songs that I hope you'll be able to devour. I was kind of torn between showing you my favorite songs of each artists or showing you the most popular of each artist since they are not all well-known, but I kind of did a mix of both.

So what do you think?  Do you like Icelandic artists?  What are your personal favorites?  I've also got Iceland on the mind because I am going there for a three day trip beginning the 7th of August! So if you live there or have visited, feel free to give me some tips on what you loved.

10 of My Favorite Songs by Icelandic Artists

1) Bjork-Oceania
This song is is full of ups and downs of vocal emotion and makes you feel like you are a fish swimming around in the ocean.

2) Bjork- Hyperballad (Brodsky Quartet Version)
This is a different version of her original song, Hyperballad, but I love it because of all the beautiful string accompaniment.

3) Bjork-Enjoy
This is the last of my Bjork pics though she has too many great songs to mention.  This song is chaotic and erotic.  I almost drove to Karlovy Vary last month to see the European premiere of Biophilia.

4) Emiliana Torrini- Unemployed in Summertime
Such a smooth voice.  You wouldn't think Emiliana Torrini sounds like an Icelandic artist but she has both Italian and Icelandic parents. I admit her songs are hit or miss sometimes but she's got a great voice and this song is dreamy and makes me miss being 21 and unemployed.

5) Of Monsters and Men- From Finner
Of Monsters and Men are huge right now in Iceland and in the US.  They are fun and folky.  This is my favorite track from the album, My Head is an Animal.

6) Mammut-Svefnsykt
I don't know how I found out about Mammut but I love them.  They sound like they could have come straight out of the 90's with their alt rock sound.  It doesn't matter that I don't understand a word they are saying, they are fun!

7) Mum- Green Grass of Tunnel
Mum have been around for a long time.  They are another dreamy Icelandic band with mostly instrumentals and a soft female voice every now and again.  Perfect daydreaming music.

8) Retro Stefson-Glow
This is, I think, the newest artist on the list.  They are a little funky, a little R&B, but just overall fun. You can't listen to this song and not be happy.

9) Sigur Ros- Untitled #1 "Vaka"
I had to pick two Sigur Ros songs because well, they are awesome.  Jonsi's voice is mesmerizing.  I can listed to this music for hours.  In fact my entire playlist while guests were getting their seats before my wedding ceremony was all Sigur Ros, but I highly doubt any of my guests knew what is was.

10) Sigur Ros- Fjogur Piano
This is a newer song from Sigur Ros and if anyone knows about it it's because Shia Labeouf was in the music video and totally showed his junk.  Junk aside, I totally love this song.   It's beautiful!

So those are just 10 of my favorite songs by Icelandic artists.  There are so many other great songs and it's cool that there are so many great artist coming out of Iceland.  Do you listen to any of these artists?

If you have any recommendations for other Icelandic artists, I'm all ears.  And don't forget to follow along on my trip to Iceland beginning tomorrow through my Instagram!

Nymphenburg Palace

nymphenburg palace

Last month I got to go back to a place I love - Munich!  One of my dearest friends from the States came to visit me and so a whirlwind adventure ensued beginning with a visit to the Nymphenburg Palace or Schloss Nymphenburg followed by the Hofbrauhaus (not pictured).

I couldn't pass up another opportunity to get to see some shining examples of Rococo interior and furniture mixed in with an overall Baroque aesthetic.  It was designed to be the Summer residence for the rulers of Bavaria.  You can find more history on the Palace here.

You only get to see a fraction of the actual rooms in the palace compared to room after room that you get to see in the Munich Residenz but sometimes just seeing a little bit is more enticing.  Also, the palace is much easier to get to by car as it lies a bit outside the city.

You can opt to take different tours like the horse carriage museum and the porcelain room, but my friend Destiny and I decided to see just the basic tour of the palace with an audio guide.  It costs 6 euros to do a self guided tour in the Summer.  Plus you get to walk around the most beautiful Baroque gardens and courtyard both in front and behind the palace for free.  If anything, this would be a great place for an impromptu photo shoot.  It's gorgeous!

Once again, what I love about this place is that photos are absolutely allowed (without flash)!

Have you visited a Palace?  Tell me all about it!
